Description
The Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), also called Gray Squirrel, is a prolific, gray squirrel found in the eastern and midwestern United States. Its fur is mostly gray, but frequently has some brownish color. It has a bushy tail. Adults weigh about 14-21 ounces. Preferred foods include tree bark and buds, berries, seeds, acorns, nuts and mushrooms. They also scavenge in gardens for fruits and vegetables. Gray Squirrels commonly collect and hoard food, hiding food in small caches to be retrieved days or even months later. Eastern Gray Squirrels in the wild may live in dense forests, and prefer hardwood forests over coniferous forests. They also adapt to living close to people, in backyards and in parks.
This Eastern Gray Squirrel sitting on a branch and eating a lemon caught my eye while birding at Croton Point Park, in Croton, New York, which has a campground area. I was a little surprised to watch this adorable squirrel consume the lemon, while another squirrel on the ground 10 yards away was eating a tomato! I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR lens to capture this image on 1-21-2018.
